Professional Photography Associations

Are associations worth it?

As a photographer, at some point in your career, you’ll likely wonder if you should join any professional photography associations.

Personally, I have been a member of two different organizations. I am currently with APNPI (Accredited Professional Newborn Photographers International).

I highly recommend joining an association, but on one condition – you need to put in the effort.

  • You need to participate in the meetings, or image competitions, or mentoring, or the accreditation process, or whatever is being offered
  • you need to participate even before you feel you’re ready, because it’s the best way to grow.

Does it sting to hear your beloved images get ripped apart in judging? Absolutely. If you really listen though, you’ll usually end up agreeing with the critique. And now you have a list of things to watch for and improve upon next time.

Other benefits of joining a professional photography association:

  • being able to call yourself a professional with confidence
  • access to additional resources
  • discounts with partner companies
  • continuing education
  • networking and support
  • ethical guidelines
  • insurance or group rates
  • listing in the directory (SEO, potential for clients to find you)

List of popular professional photography associations include:

PPOC – Professional Photographers of Canada
PPA – Professional Photographers of America
NAPCP – National Association of Professional Child Photographers
WPPI – Wedding and Portrait Photographers International
CAPIC – Canadian Association of Profession Image Creators

See which organizations might be the best fit for you, and give it your all! You’ll find you’ll be rewarded in many ways, and maybe even, awarded 😉
